Johnny Cash – “Rusty Cage” (Soundgarden Cover // Audio)
‘CMJ New Music Monthly Volume 40 December 1996’
College Music Journal – Dec. 1996
*Johnny Cash – “Rusty Cage” (Soundgarden Cover) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CrBqRb3VGM // https://www.discogs.com/release/1402554-Various-CMJ-New-Music-Monthly-Volume-40-December-1996 // Johnny Cash’s cover of “Rusty Cage” was released in 1996 on his album ‘American II: Unchained’ and produced by Rick Rubin. The song was originally written by Chris Cornell of the grunge band Soundgarden, and Cash’s rendition reimagines the track as a gothic country roots rocker, featuring backing from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Marty Stuart. Another classic from my CMJ CD rips!*

Reverend Horton Heat – “Big Red Rocket Of Love” (Audio)
‘CMJ New Music Monthly Volume 36 August 1996’
College Music Journal – Aug. 1996
*Reverend Horton Heat – “Big Red Rocket Of Love” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4OobD4aP5Y // https://www.discogs.com/release/1370997-Various-CMJ-New-Music-Monthly-Volume-36-August-1996 // From the same CMJ CD that featured yesterday’s Dub Narcotic Sound System song, “Big Red Rocket of Love” is the title and lead track of The Reverend Horton Heat’s 1996 album, ‘It’s Martini Time,’ released on Interscope Records. A significant milestone, it was the first Horton Heat album to chart on the Billboard 200, peaking at #165 and arriving as the swing/rockabilly revival was gaining mainstream momentum (Brian Setzer would soon achieve major crossover success with a similar style – as my college radio station was suffering from a swing vs. ska battle to the death lol).*
