Sandra Bernhard – “Manic Superstar” (Audio)
‘Tonnage: A Compilation’
Epic – Jan. 3, 1995
*Sandra Bernhard – “Manic Superstar” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPdLBD9s8HI (Music Video Version) // https://www.discogs.com/release/414053-Various-Tonnage // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_Bernhard // I ASKED BRAVE: what would you call Sandra Bernhard – “Manic Superstar”? a cover? a parody? an interpolation? “It’s best described as an interpolation (or more loosely, a medley/mashup). “Manic Superstar” on Excuses for Bad Behavior, Part 1 (1994) weaves together “Everything’s Alright” from Jesus Christ Superstar (Andrew Lloyd Webber) and “Manic Depression” by Jimi Hendrix into a new rock arrangement — both composers are credited on the release. It’s not a parody (there’s no satirical or mocking intent toward the originals) and not a straight cover (it doesn’t faithfully reproduce either song on its own; it fuses them into something new).” Same comp as Wednesday’s The The tune!*

Tom Petty – “You Don’t Know How It Feels” // “Girl On LSD” (Audio)
‘You Don’t Know How It Feels b/w Girl On LSD’
Warner Bros. – Nov. 7, 1994

Due to the song’s reference to marijuana, several outlets including MTV, VH1, and many radio stations aired a censored version, taking the word “roll” out of “let’s roll another joint”, or a version that played the word “joint” backwards. Petty originally intended the B-side of the single, “Girl on LSD”, to appear on Wildflowers, but Warner Bros. refused because it was too controversial.*
