defunct uar sat: friday est. reentry The 6.5-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, projected to fall back to Earth on Friday, reports the Telegraph. UARS carried into orbit in 1991 by the Space Shuttle, operated for 14 years, collecting measurements of ozone and other chemicals in atmosphere. NASA believes 26 parts are large enough to survive reentry somewhere over North or South America. A 6.5 ton object would jump start any space junk recovery business, where’s our Fred Sanford of Space?
