occult symbolism of movie 'metropolis'

The 1927 silent movie Metropolis is more than science fiction. The Vigilant Citizen (VC) notes occult symbols in movie and its influence on pop occulture, in article,The Occult Symbolism of Movie “Metropolis” and its Importance in Pop Culture. VC sees clearly, …’Metropolis’ is increasingly relevant as many of its predictions are becoming reality…a silent science-fiction movie released in 1927 by Fritz Lang, a master of German Expressionism. Set in a futuristic dystopia divided into two distinct and separate classes—the thinkers and the workers—Metropolis describes the struggles between the two opposite entities. Knowing that it was produced in 1927, viewing this movie today is quite an experience as many “sci-fi” aspects of the plot are eerily close to reality.

A self-justifying axiom of the elite is the mirrored relationship between the thinkers and workers. “We find here a dualistic relation where two opposite entities exist in mutual dependence, a concept that has deep occult resonance,” writes VC. “As deep as lay the workers’ city below the earth, so high above it towered the complex named “The Club of the Sons” with its lecture halls,” flashed on the movie screen in shape of a pyramid, VC informs, a thinly veiled reference to hermetic axiom, “As Above, So Below”. Opposites whose energies represent a perfect balance.

The workers live and work underground in a constant state of physical and mental exhaustion.  The VC article observes workers, “…labor in a monstrous machine, a hellish industrial complex where they must accomplish repetitive and dehumanizing tasks. At one point, the machine is compared to Moloch, the ancient Semitic deity honored by human sacrifices…Moloch the God Baal, the Bull of the Sun, was widely worshipped in the ancient Near East and wherever Carthaginian culture extended. Baal Moloch was conceived under the form of a calf or an ox or depicted as a man with the head of a bull. The sacrifices went through the “belly of the beast”. Are you beginning to recognize your world? The present writer suggests population growth has created imbalance. “The Beast” cannot devour enough sacrifices to maintain a perfect balance, so desired by the thinkers-elite, a reason the human race once again lurches toward world war.

The Pentagram and inverted pentagram are included in movie scenes. An upright pentagram represents health and mathematical perfection, the inverted pentagram connotes black magic, a corruption of ideals. Joh Fredersen, the autocratic founder of Metropolis, is compared by VC to the Gnostic demiurge, a creator and ruler. The New Tower of Babel is name given Fredersen’s headquarters. Freder Fredersen, Joh’s son, becomes a mediator between the two entities, a friendly face supplied to an unfriendly thinkers-elite. Metropolis concludes with caption, “The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart”. The article does a mind-blowing job showing parallels in today’s media.  VC believes all directed to make as many people into “ignorant, degenerate and materialistic” slobs, more easily managed and manipulated by the thinkers-elite.

VC summarizes “the moral of the story” of Metropolis as a message to the elite:  to keep the oppressed in check, you must win their hearts!  And how is the heart won? VC believes media is the mediator of today!  The workers are deceived, in the end, to believe their circumstances will change, but only get the friendly face of a mediator. You’ll have to read article to see how scientific elite deceive the workers with their android. Also, the android’s role in spreading corruption at the men’s night club/Babylon, Yoshiwara. The present writer can only agree with the Vigilant Citizen! We march toward Moloch and into the “Belly of the Beast”.
