Last weekend the comedy, The Other Woman was smartly counter programmed against Captain America 2 and was able to take in over $24 million on over 3,000 screens. The reviews have been brutal but the audiences — which are mostly women — have enjoyed the film, and word of mouth is good as it has grossed an additional $6 million since the weekend. What the success of this poorly reviewed film shows is that women are desperate for films that are about women and that a mediocre movie about women can pull in audiences just like a mediocre movie about men.
